The World’s Most Successful Logos

The World’s Most Successful Logos

A logo can make or break a brand; it will invoke feelings in consumers, as it represents the presence of a product. It’s the identity of a company and it has to be powerful and memorable.

When you see the Google logo, you instantly think of an online search engine, and Coca-Cola’s logo might make you buy a drink. There are many famous logos that are instantly recognisable by anyone, anywhere. But what makes logos this successful?

Apple

Co-founder Ronald Wayne created an initial logo, but Steve Jobs considered it too intricate. Rob Janoff created the 1977 Apple logo of a rainbow striped apple with the word ‘apple’, in order to appeal to young people and illustrate the computer’s ability of reproducing colours. The “bite” taken out of the apple is to distinguish it from a cherry.

Coca-Cola

Introduced in 1886 and created by Frank Mason Robinson, the company’s name was written in the Spencerian script typeface, the main formal handwriting style at the time.

Google

Ruth Kedar introduced, in 1999, a polished version of the logo that co-founder Sergey Brin designed in 1988. Kedar’s simplified version without the exclamation mark stayed in use until 2010, but the new version hasn’t changed much from the original design.

Microsoft

The now famous logo was introduced in 2012, an indication of its focus on modern interfaces. It includes four coloured squares representing its products: Windows (blue), Bing (yellow), Xbox (green), and Office (red).

Nike

Carolyn Davidson was inspired by Nike, the namesake of the Greek goddess of victory. She created the famous swoosh that implies movement and speed as has become an iconic symbol for sports footwear.

How to Have a Successful Logo

Designing a logo can be a complicated process, as there are many factors to take into consideration. Size, shape, colours, font; the logo needs to reflect the overall image your company conveys so that when consumers see it, they will instantly recognise your company and your products.

Colour

Colours have meanings and they can evoke different feelings in consumers. Bright colours can grab someone’s attention but they can come across as too aggressive. On the other hand, more muted tones seem sophisticated but can be easily overlooked. It’s important that you understand your brand and that you take colour meanings into consideration when designing your logo; colour balance is vital.

Originality

Having a logo that stands out for being original and creative is something businesses strive for. It’s important to have a logo that isn’t easily confused with your competitor’s. Brand confusion can harm your company and business, as you may find your reputation at stake. Consider existing logos and try colour or shape variations that aren’t seen and personalise it with your company’s history.

Simplicity

Some of the most successful company logos are simple, which makes them easy to remember. McDonald’s sports only a golden ‘M’ and it’s one of the most recognisable logos you can find. If your logo has a lot of elements in it, it becomes difficult to memorise and to not be distracted by intricate details.
